Technical Parameters of SFP Modules

1. SFP Modules Data Rate

  • The speed of the SFP Modules, measured in Gbps (Gigabits per second). Common rates include:
  • 1Gbps, 10Gbps, 25Gbps, 40Gbps, 100Gbps.
  • The data rate must match the network device and link requirements.

2. Wavelength

  • The operating wavelength of the optical signal, measured in nanometers (nm). Common wavelengths include:
  • 850nm: For multimode SFP modules, suitable for short-distance transmission.
  • 1310nm: For single-mode SFP, suitable for medium-distance transmission.
  • 1550nm: For single-mode SFP, suitable for long-distance transmission.
  • CWDM/DWDM modules use specific wavelengths (e.g., 1470nm–1610nm) for wavelength-division multiplexing.

3. SFP Modules Transmission Distance

  • Indicates the maximum transmission distance the module supports, measured in meters (m) or kilometers (km):
  • Short Range (SR): Typically up to 300 meters.
  • Intermediate Range (IR): 1–40 kilometers.
  • Long Range (LR): Up to 80 kilometers or more.

4. SFP Modules Connector Type

  • Common types of optical connectors include:
  • LC Connector: Commonly used with single-mode and multimode fibers.
  • SC Connector: Often found in earlier optical modules.
  • MPO/MTP Connector: Used for high-density connections.
  • RJ-45 Connector: Used in copper SFP modules.

5. Fiber Type

  • Multimode Fiber (MMF): Used with short wavelengths (850nm) for short-distance transmission.
  • Single-mode Fiber (SMF): Used with longer wavelengths (1310nm, 1550nm) for long-distance transmission.

6. Optical Power

  • Includes two main parameters:
  • Tx Power (Transmit Power): The strength of the optical signal transmitted by the module, measured in dBm.
  • Rx Sensitivity (Receiver Sensitivity): The minimum optical signal strength the module can receive, typically expressed as a negative value (e.g., -14dBm).

7. SFP Modules Protocol Compatibility

  • Compatible with specific protocols or standards, such as:
  • Ethernet (e.g., Gigabit Ethernet, 10GbE)
  • SONET/SDH (Synchronous Optical Network/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy)
  • Fibre Channel (for storage area networks)

8. Power Consumption

  • SFP are designed for low power consumption, typically under 1W. Some high-performance modules may consume more power.

9. Operating Temperature

  • Commercial Temperature (C-Temp): 0°C to 70°C.
  • Industrial Temperature (I-Temp): -40°C to 85°C, suitable for harsh environments.

10. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM)

  • Modules with DDM support real-time monitoring of parameters, such as:
  • Laser bias current
  • Temperature
  • Supply voltage
  • Transmit/receive optical power

11. SFP Modules Type and Compatibility

  • Module Types: SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP28 (different generations support various speeds and functions).
  • Vendor Compatibility: Some modules are vendor-specific (e.g., Cisco, Huawei, H3C), while others are universal and support multiple brands.

12. Special Features

  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM/DWDM): Provides multiple wavelengths for increased link capacity.
  • Duplex/Simplex: Duplex modules require two fibers (Tx and Rx), while simplex modules use one fiber (with bidirectional wavelength multiplexing).
